Yet something else I did not know about Series 1 E Types. Reading from Wikipedia
"Less widely known, right at the end of Series 1 production and prior to the transitional "Series 1?" referred to below, a very small number 10 to 20 Series 1 cars were produced, with open headlights in the uk, these series one cars that had their head lights modified by removing the covers and altering the scoops they sit in, the headlights differ in several respects from the "production" Series 1?, the main being they are shorter at 143mm from the production Series 1? at 160mm .[17][18] Production dates on these machines vary but in right hand drive form production has been verified as late as March 1968.[19] The low number of these cars produced make them amongst the rarest of all production E Types".

More details here: JCNA S1.5 Judge's Guide: http://www.jcna.com/library/concours/2006/e-type1.5.pdf

They have been called, retrospectively, S1.25 cars and it was Jaguar using up as many bits as they could before the S2 model was formally announced. Jaguar refuse to acknowledge the retrospective S1.25 and S1.5 designations and regard them as S1 cars with normal in production development.

There's lots of conflicting info w.r.t. build numbers but the Wikipedia estimate of 10-20 S1.25 cars FOR THE UK is a bit misleading!

According to that JNCA Guide, Jaguar made between 1,484 (Build Records, US market only) and 3,685 (Spares Bulletin, all markets) S1.25 cars. It even says "The Series 1.25 are not rare..."

Using the ekedata (http://www.xkedata.com/stats/) production numbers (that Wikipedia refer to) it says 16,195 4.2Ltr S1 cars were produced, so between 9-22% were S1.25s. Using the larger JNCA figure it makes S1.25 cars only about half as common as S1.5 cars.

Cheers
