Help with research please!

I'm new to the forum and looking for some help with researching the history of my car as I've come to something of a loose end.

Does anyone know where or how (or whether it's even possible) to get access to Henlys' records? According to the heritage cert, my car was supplied via Henlys but the first owner doesn't appear on the DVLA records. Henlys might be a good place to look - if they hadn't disappeared into liquidation of course

It may be a long shot but worth trying. I'd really appreciate any suggestions

Henly's, I'm afraid, went bust in the 1980s or thereabouts and so far as I understand from other people who have tried to find the records , they have disappeared without trace . Do I gather from the fact that the first owner is not on DVLA records that you have got such history as the DVLA still possesses ?

Thanks for the post. Yes, I have everything DVLA can provide.

All the Henly's references I can find lead to the lquidator's office in Cannon St, London. Maybe that is worth a go

From what I have found out, owner records were kept at the regional offices issuing registration numbers. It wasn't until around 1976 that the records were centralised at the DVLA.

The data transferred to the DVLA varied from regional office to regional office. So some previous keeper records may have been lost. The regional records should still be held by the current county councils. It might be worth contacting the council records department where your car was first registered.

However not all will still have the information. Mine was registered by Henly in Manchester. Years ago, they decided to destroy their historical records rather than microfiche them.

Being a London registered car, I guess I will need to track down the GLC archives.

It's a 1967 S1 1/2 FHC, dark blue (although was not always!), reg ULU540F. First owner was in Sunderland. The car was apparently used for hillclimbing in the 1970's, possibly in Yorkshire. Any clues or information would be greatly appreciated

It is a superb resource and even if it doesn't help your retrospective search you are putting down markers for future history. It also helps protect against cloning and re-emergence after theft.

Dear Peter,

Surely one would want to remove one's car from XKEdata if stolen and then watch and hope for it to reappear? Were a stolen car to remain on the database, I would have thought that it would be a guarantee that it would be broken up and lost forever, were the thief to have seen it already there.

Interesting concept, and not without its attractions Mr H.

I suppose it depends on one's point of view. The red coupe was already dismantled by the time it was spotted and given the ease with which the OTS could be recommissioned as another car simply by swapping the picture frame and body tag, I would have thought it child's play for the professional thieves to assign a different identity and avoid breaking that car up.

I suppose I was thinking of possible future buyers being alerted should anyone be mad enough to try selling the cars as their real selves in some otber country? After all, what use is a record of stolen cars if it is not made available for viewing?

The first owner is normally on the Heritage Certificate , maybe it could have been omitted ? , the original leather bound factory build record books have a lot more information than is on your heritage certificate , ie key numbers , the amount of petrol at the time of despatch and the first owner details etc .

If you contact Jaguar heritage Trust and quote your details with reference to your certificate and your car they may have a look for you , if they allow it you might even be lucky enough to view the entry in the book personally , Anders allowed me to do this when the archives were held at Browns Lane .
