#1 Donald Campbell's E-type

Post by PaulColeman » Fri Aug 12, 2016 8:11 am

I saw a picture of Donald Campbell's driveway and wondered if his family still owned his blue e-type GLM37C. It's taxed and MOTd so obviously still in existence...

I didn't want to buy it, just curious! He's got a Mini (Cooper?) in the back there too, so the man obviously had taste

wondered if his family still owned his blue e-type GLM37C
was mentioned back in 2011, that his family sold the car shortly after his death. see...

incidentally, January 2017 will see 50yrs since his death. A date worthy of note.

I did try the search button and previous post did come up, but when I clicked on them I got error and directed to the E type uk site.
I assumed they had been lost when changing servers.

found this nice clip from British Pathe showing his E type, (at 49 secs) have we got this in the video section?

The Donald Campbell E Type still exists. It was sympathetically restored about 5 years ago and includes some period details.

However, The owner does not want publicity so I cannot reveal any more

Good to know John although to be honest no one here is interested in who the current custodian is, just if the car still exists and in what condition.

indeed he was. As a pure coincidence, the second owner of my car, a 3.8 FHC, owned Donald Campbells XK150 and traded it in with Camden Motors of Leighton Buzzard to buy the E type. At least this is what he told me, he is getting on a bit now , as one may expect. I would love to see the re run of Bluebird at Coniston when it happens. Perhaps it could be an E type forum run and get together?

My Dads very good friend the late Nigel Moores used to enter sprints and hill limbs etc in the North West (up North to many of you) under the nom de plume,Willy Ecerslike. His father was not keen that he raced so tried to remain anonymous. :welcomewave:

Hmmmm..... I'd be up for that if the weather's OK! They say you can tell when it's summer in "The Lakes", 'cos the rain gets warmer.........

Depending which way people are travelling, if coming across from Jct 36 of the M6, there's the Lakeland Motor Museum (https://www.lakelandmotormuseum.co.uk/c ... l-bluebird) en route, plus the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (http://www.lakesiderailway.co.uk/) .... and for those that really didn't know, here's where Coniston is....

I use to be taken to school in this E type. It was owned by my grandfather after Donald's tragic death. Given to him by his wife to clear debts owed for build and fabrication of the Bluebird. My grandfather, William Ewart James had a engineering company in leatherhead. W.E.James & son's. The car was passed to my uncle, Reg James, who lived in Bookham, Surrey. This would have been in the late seventies if my memory serves me right. In the early eighties the clutch needed replacing, which never got done, so it sat in his garage looking rather sad for its self for the next decade and a half. Last time I saw it, it was still there in the mid nineties, under a blue tarpaulin. I hope this clears up some of the history of the car. When I was young I would dare to dream that one day it would be handed down to me. Alas not to be. I can tell you that for me, it was the most beautiful car I have ever seen, and have some wonderful memories attached to it.
