#1 Cast manifolds

Post by Simonpfhc » Sun Dec 20, 2015 9:10 pm

Hi All,

I've just finished sand-blasting and painting my original cast exhaust manifolds and now I've bolted them to the engine, I really think they are a bit too far gone and don't do the engine justice in the looks department.

Are there any suppliers providing these new with a smooth coating that won't crack off on the first drip of rain through the louvres?

Cheers,
Simon

Hi Simon,

This has been discussed at some length in this forum somewhere. The upshot was that any of the available coatings crack/peel and the best option is black BBQ paint.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for ypur reply. I'm happy with the paint I've used, but I really need new manifolds. However, the only ones I have seen are from SNG and they are ceramic coated which will probably just crack off at the first sign of temp change (rain!).

What I am really after is has anyone bought brand new manifolds from somewhere that have lasted.

Cheers.

Hi Simon,

Apologies, I misinterpreted the question. I believe Ian at Ecosse Motorsport is doing coated manifolds now but not sure if anyone has any experience of them.

Just checked & looks like he is only offering in-house coatings for his FIA manifolds (and perhaps customers own manifolds).

Just give Ian a ring. He is very helpful and may just coat your existing manifolds. I bought his FIA manifolds in the summer. Fabulous finish and after 2000 miles no sign of a problem.

Hi Simon,

I'm sure Andy at Hutsons told me he can get new ones in an uncoated state if you wanted to coat them yourself.

Just out of curiousity. What's the difference between a "FIA"-manifold and a regular one?

Hi Simon as per my post above and the link by mark to XK...the E Mag refers to newly introduced by XK made from Ductile iron for superior temperature resistance and structural stability.. available bare or ceramic coated

FI*A means it was homologated in period for racing E-Type's - typically the LWE's. It comprises of a pair of tubular manifolds each with three equal length pipes. The cast ones are asymmetric and arguably reduce power at high revs although they improve torque at low revs. So if you are going racing and regularly expect to see 3,500 to 5,500 rpm then these are for you. On a road car they will cause a huge torque dip between 2,250 and 2,750 rpm - just where you need it when overtaking - so are best avoided.

Not my experience with the FIA manifolds on a 3.8, David. The FIA manifold is fitted to an Ecosse 2" exhaust. On the rolling road, at the wheels, the figures showed 185 lbs ft at 1300rpm, then climbing to 230 lbs ft at 2250rpm and flat all the way 3750 rpm, then falling gradually to 200 lbs ft at 4250 rpm. Those figures were with a loose valve guide on no1 cylinder. The head is currently off, with new valve guides being fitted, and then gas flowed. Slightly hotter road cams will also be fitted. I will advise the rolling road figures in the New Year when completed.

I thought the E-Type wasn't homolagated with tubular manifolds, so I thought there were a special Cast FIA version. You learn something every day.

Barry

If you have Ecosse Motorsport or Classic Fabs silencers they are fitted with venturi's to overcome the torque dip. They make the engine 'see' a 1.75" exhaust system - you get the noise of a 2" big bore, flat torque with reduced top end power. A true FIA exhaust system would be 2" or more throughout i.e. no venturi's.

Hi Ian, yes I spotted those too ;-) Not really interested as A) I don't want an enamelled finish and B) I can buy a brand new pair from Hutsons (bare metal) for the same price :-)

Thanks for the thought though.

Cheers.
