#1 Series one service info

Post by Bakergt40 » Mon Dec 28, 2015 4:41 pm

Basic question really !
Is there a recommended spark plug best for a 1964 3.8 series 1 fhc or just stick to what the manual says I'm still running with the distributor and no electronic ignition as yet
Also same about the engine oil, I only use quality oils like shell or castrol

Suggestions of type ?

Cheers

For the plugs use NGK BP5ES and oil, just go for a 20w/50. Halfords Classic or equivlaent should be fine. It's an old engine design with relatively large tolerances so wouldn't recommmend a synthetic.

Cheers.

#3 Oils

Agree. Use NGK BP5ES. For oils try www.classic-oils.net. They do a range of 20w50 mineral oils. They are usually cheaper than Halfords. You can buy cases of four 5 litre cans....the E type sump needs almost two per change!!!!

They do mail order and are usually at the Jaguar spares days at Stoneleigh too where you can buy and save postage. I stock up!

Ignore all the service interval mileage stuff and change once a year without fail along with the filter of course.

I always had good results with the Autolite 55 plugs, with the gap set to factory spec. Bosch and NGK plugs were OK, but the car just ran well on the Autolites. This was the plug preferred by Denis Jenkinson when he ran his FHC all over Europe in the '60s. I was never happy with any Champion plug. E-Types do benefit from a coil upgrade and electronic ignition as well. Others' comments regarding oil are spot on. Castrol 20/50 is as good as any, but the the frequency of changes really depend on how the car is used. When my '65 was a daily driver, I changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. When it became a not-so-daily driver, I changed everything at six-month intervals.

Planning on getting E-Type No. 3 as soon as possible....

Thanks to you all
I get my oils through work, so I'll order some. I always tend to over change oil
Rather than leave to long.

As for the oil filter, I have the original style canister type so I'll change that as a matter of course.
When I got the car they told me it was serviced and the oil looked clean but if I change it you know it's done for sure.
As for plugs again I'll get through work and NGK is my preferred plug for my many other motorised bits.

I spoke to E Type UK the other week and there going to give it a check over soon to advise of anything that either needs doing or might benefit from.
I could do most jobs on the E but until I get used to it best get the advise of the pro's

Cheers for the info
