The 'E' Type Forum

Well, after looking for seven months and looking at some dogs and some overpriced (in my opinion!) motors, iv'e finally found one and handed over the cash! She arrives on Sunday and I can't wait!

She is a 1965 FHC all numbers matching, in British Racing Green with sage green interior (a lot of green I know, but she looks lovely). She had a full restoration (I've seen the photos and it looked pretty thorough) between '87-'91 and has only covered 11000 miles since. there a a few jobs that need doing but she is generally in very good order.

She comes with a history file of old MOT's, documents and about a hundred invoices for work done over the years, nearly all of which has been done by the Jaguar specialist that restored her.

As soon as I get her I will take some photo's and post them up if I can figure out how!

Brace yourselves for a million stupid questions as I endeavour to navigate my way through the joys and nightmares of ownership.

Congratulations Ian. I hope the sun comes out on Sunday so that you can have a play. Whatever it sounds as if just looking at her will do for starters. A great combination of model and colour.

Thanks for the good wishes guys, yes Harry, that's the one. to be honest the picture in the mag just doesn't do it justice as its a very dark photo.

I was in two minds to even go and look at her as it was a 9 hour round trip but i'm glad I did! I managed to view her in full bright sunshine which is always best for spotting any paint blemishes.

There are a few jobs to do (aren't there always!) but I managed to get her quite a bit cheaper than the ad so I'm pretty pleased. I'm keeping an eye on the forecast which at the moment is telling me Sunday and Monday are going to be dry and fairly sunny here in the midlands, so guess what i'll be doing! :D

Great! the Met office forecast for today and Monday has done a 180 deg turn and now i've got two days of rain! Don't you just love the British weather :x :x

Well she arrived and I managed to go for my first ever drive in an E-Type and you still can't wipe the grin off my face!

I'm hoping that you may see some photos below. Weather was very overcast so I'll do some more if the sun ever comes out!

Agreed. Do NOTHING to it except maintenance. Especially do not move to the Dark Side by fitting the ubiquitous Pirelli P4000 rubber - screws up the entire car!

Looking very nice, Ian. The car is the same colour and model as George Best had in the day. If you drive it around certain areas of Manchester you'll get a lot of old dears throwing themselves at you.! Driving it should be a revelation compared with a normal car...compared with a Landy you should have frightened yourself senseless.

It took me a long time to get used to that bonnet, especially parking up behind other cars.

Hi Erik, 185 R15 Michelin's.

Well the sun has shone today and i've been round to about half a dozen friends houses as an excuse to drive her and show her off. Done about 100 miles today and loved every minute of it, hell of a change from my Land Rovers

Decided to enjoy her today and put off looking for the faults till it's raining. Clock at the bottom of the speedo doesn't work but i'm told this is pretty common.

I noticed that after a period of overrun, slowing down for say, a roundabout, there is a puff of blue smoke when I re-apply the throttle. It's not bad and there is no sign of blue haze when driving normally.

I have heard these engines tend to burn a bit of oil, so is this normal or do I need to be worried?

A puff of blue after overrun is just a bit of oil getting down between the valve guide and stem. I wouldn't worry about it...it's likely that it's just one or two rubber stem seals aren't doing their job quite properly....have gone a bit hard...maybe lack of use. In the scheme of things, if that's all that's wrong with the car, you've got a good 'un!
