Each year I just always seem to renew with the same company without thinking but following on from a previous thread in the Owners Gallery I thought I'd ask around this year and post here a couple of renewal quotes I've had for my Etype
the car: Series 2 OTS, fully comp, JEC agreed value ?30K, garaged, owner 50yo (ish), clean license
Footman James (JEC recommended)
?190, unlimited mileage, incl UK & Euro breakdown cover, legal cover
(premium last year was ?185)
Adrian Flux (JEC recommended)
?380, unlimited mileage, incl Breakdown cover, legal cover
or
?193, upto 3000 miles pa, incl Breakdown cover, legal cover
Peter D james (JEC recommended)
?169, unlimited mileage, incl Breakdown cover (max agreed value ?30k)
How does this compare with your insurance? Anyone suggest any other companies to compare ?

I used to be with Norwich Union and for an agreed value of ?79k (supported by pictures and reports etc) they were charging me ?1,200 limited to 4k miles and lots of conditions about not having any fun (thou shalt not partake of rallies, car clubs, car meetings, rallies, Nurburgring, travel in convoy with more than two cars, enjoy yourself etc etc) so avoid them like the plague - sorry Angus
Now with Footman James who said "gives us ?265.05 of you hard earned cash and go out an enjoy yourself lad!" No 'ifs' or 'buts' - just have a good time.

Never had to claim of course but the service so far has been excellent.

I'm thinking of asking the Insurance company to add the following clauses to a policy. Has anyone got anything similar written into their insurance policy ?
1. in the event of the car requiring repairs, the work is undertaken by an Etype specialist garage rather than the local do-anything repairer
2. in the event of the car being written off by the insurer, the owner has the option of buying the damaged car off the insurer ?

Bill : the buyback clause is fairly standard if you request it, and you should have no difficulty in getting such a clause incorporated

I asked Footman James about the buy back clause and they confirmed that the owner will be given first option in that event.
They also confirmed that in the event of repairs being required, the choice of which company would carry out the repairs was down to the policyholder - which is good news - rather than being forced to use an "insurance approved" local garage.
So my next question is .. if the unthinkable should ever happen, lets say you are rear-ended or hit at the front causing severe but repairable damage, who would you choose to do the repairs confident that they know what they are doing and will do a quality job whilst being acceptable to the insurance company - ie; I doubt a small corner garage would be allowed to do the repairs even though they may be competent.
I'm not tempting fate, but its like drawing up a will, you got to have a plan before anything happens !

Any number of specialists could do the work but it will possibly depend on how quickly you want the job done. As an indication one of the Forum members (Ian) has just booked his car into Alan Proctor but work won't start until late September. If you need a 'recognised' specialist which nowadays means they have a web site and established profile the closest to you would be CMC who can be relied on to do a top job. They, and their work, are so well known the Insurance company could not possibly argue. Ditto E-Type UK for those in the south.

To CMC I would add Hutson's in bradford who can build you a new shell with ease. However, there is a caveat which I raise in relation to all the names mentioned. All would do a first rate job on an undamaged but rusty car. What is less certain is whether any of them have the specialised "pulling" machinery which is necessary to pull a twisted car back into shape i.e they are restorers and not bodyshops in the accident repair business

Once you see what CMC have been able to do with the Lindner Lightweight wrecked shell any such worries should disappear.
