#1 Door vapour barrier

Post by mgcjag » Fri Sep 09, 2016 5:13 pm

Hi All.....retrimming the interior and need a solution for the door vapour barrier....the thin plastic i removed was glued on with contact adhesive, what have you used? Ideally being able to peal off and re stick back in place would be ideal with something like a non setting mastic...any ideas...thanks.... Steve

What I did Steve was glue a polythene sheet onto the back of the door cards to protect them from moisture.
That way whenever the card is removed the sheet comes off with it and avoids the hassle of un-glueing it from the door itself.
Seems to work.

Hi Steve, I've not done it yet but I was thinking of using sticky vinyl wrap on the door and the door card. It could be removed from the door by warming it up with a heat gun and would stick nice and tightly to the door avoiding any bead of mastic potentially pushing the door card out.

Whenever I have made new door cards I have used polyurethane varnish to make the masonite as waterproof as I could. 50:50 Varnish:thinners, and multiple coats until it glosses up fully. I also use a layer of plastic sheeting and mastic between the door and the doorcards. Jaguar was making the cars to a price, for me it is a hobby - a can of poly varnish and a week to treat and cure isn't a big deal for me.

The whole purpose of the plastic door liner is to keep the moisture to the inside of the door, when it's raining or washing the car, protecting the inside of the door card with varnish isn't going to stop moisture from entering the cabin. It needs to fully sealed around the inside of the door perimeter. They used to use Dum Dum, which is like a flexible not hardening mastic putty.
New cars use a black Auto mastic sealant that doesn't go hard, but it's gooey as. Loctite and Wurth make sealers for the purpose. FWIW, white poly Prop is better than Black Plastic. I have used Concrete plastic in Black and Orange and deteriorates quite quickly in the Auto environment.
