XJ Wire wheels
#1 XJ Wire wheels
Are they worth collecting? As a matter of fact, I think it's a a Daimler Sovereign, but I guess they are the same Won't fit an E-Type?

Wire wheels were never offered as an option on XJ cars, although I have seen a very few with them as an aftermarket fitment. If they are from a Sovereign/420 they are the same as mark 2 / S type wires and they certainly should fit . I swap wheels freely between my E types and mark 2 and have never had a problem in either direction

Thanks.
Does that mean I should pick up hubs/drive flanges too?
Maybe the entire IRS?

Fascinating. I was always under the impression that they were different, however checking the MWS site the back spacing on both is 97mm which implies they'll fit. The only issue seens to be with the rears, where the spats on the Mk2 may need to be altered to fit wider-than-standard rims.christopher storey wrote:I swap wheels freely between my E types and mark 2

Many XJs have bolt-on wires. Check if they are splined or not?

Two comments : Andrew - yes, interesting about the rears on mark 2 saloons - I had to use Coombs spats to prevent them rubbing on corners when the Panhard rod allows very slight sideways movment of the axle
Peter's point is an important one : bolt on wheels are unlikely to be any use at all
And an afterthought - yes, if your E has bolt on hubs, then getting a complete set of hubs and spinners is necessary - but check the condition of the splines, which should not be sharp and pointed, but have a flat top to them - see other threads on this for pictures
