#1 Has anyone fitted the Pilkington heated front screen?

Post by paulsco » Mon Nov 14, 2016 10:25 pm

I ordered a heated front screen including antenna at the Classic Car Show, but I am now having some doubts as to whether this was the best choice.
I have never driven a car with a heated front screen and it appears that some people have problems looking through the elements and blurred night vision.

Its a six week delivery time, so I think I may still have time to change my mind if I need to.

Any thoughts?

I had one on a supercharged V8 Daimler and another on a Cosworth Sapphire. Very handy in winter. Vision not an issue. But do you intend driving or parking outside in icy weather?

I have one installed in my OTS, fitted while at Angus's workshops. It is excellent no distortion of view and great when the screen just steams up.

I've had heated front screens in both my XFs and think they are a wonderful safety device. Quick de-misting of the screen and no issues with seeing the wires. Yes, they can be seen, but not to affect your view ahead. I think anyone who sees the wires is looking at the screen and not the road ahead.

Why not arrange to test drive a modern Jaguar or Ford with a heated screen and see how you get on?

My Range Rover Sport has a heated screen and I can't see the wires during normal driving. Look hard and focus on them and you can.

Thank for you replies; it is all very reasuring.

I've owned several classics and the reason I decided on a heated windscreen is more to do with misting up than it is about removing ice. I needed a new windscreen anyway and this seemed a good option.

This is a driver and I may well use it in the winter if I can be confident about the security issues.

Hi - have one fitted to my daily driver (X-Type) and in reality, you don't see the wires...... your focus is beyond the bonnet and the wires are so fine that you do not see them.

I did have a sudden misting problem in another car (not fitted with heated screen) when I drove through a micro-climate and the whole car misted up - the screen option is a great safety feature in my view.

"I did have a sudden misting problem in another car (not fitted with heated screen) when I drove through a micro-climate..."

Otherwise known as driving into the cold store by accident when p*ssed after the office party.
