#1 Trim S2 door handle

Post by mgcjag » Fri Dec 30, 2016 7:47 pm

Hi All.....trimed the interior of my S2 2+2 recently....all worked out really well but never got around to doing the door handles or hatch hing/lock covers.....the original handles are colour moulded..and the hing covers have a very thin vinyl with no cotton backing so it moulds to shape easy......all the ones ive seen have stiched covers and some door handles paint finished.....as ive done every thing else i would really like to finish these last bits off......have you diy and if so how....must be an easy neat way to do the handles...thanks Steve

After some trial and error :banghead: with an old spare handle decided to split it in half and cover the top and bottom and then glue back together with pipeing around the join.. (found online someone recovering S1 handles that come in half)

Reinforced both halfs with thin MDF to give something to staple vinyl to ..apart from cutting in half i also cut down both halfs becaus i didnt want the finished handle any thicker than tbe original, had to also trim down tne top of the metal reinforcer

Next one should be easy now i know how to do it :fingerscrossed:

I really like that, looks good. So the metal plate now resides fully encaptioned in the lower halve? And I missed the screw shafts?

Hi Martin....yes the metal is still in there..you just need to cut down the top of the metal part about 8mm ..so not as far as the fixing holes....they remain and the handle fixes to the door the same as befor

For accessing the screw head, the leather in the bottom half would have to have an opening, no?

Hi Martin..yes correct...the photos were taken befor I made the holes.....I just punctured through the vinyl then continued pushing up through the hole in the metal and out through the thin mdf....all very simple
