Starter Motor not engaging

My starter motor doesn't want to engage - I can hear it turning but it obviously isn't engaging with the flywheel. It will eventually engage and start the car. I have tried changing the starter motor thinking that it was a damaged drive but it has made no difference. So now I have a new starter with the same problem! The car is a 1968 4.2 which has the normal pre engaged starter motor. It starts on a button not a key.

I have an 'invisishield' anti theft device and I am suspicious that for some reason it is putting resistance in the system and preventing enough current getting to the starter?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Chris if the starter motor is turning on a pre engaged motor it means that the armature should have moved to engage with the flywheel. if it is turning then it may be that you have some teeth missing on the flywheel. The test would be to try the starter until you can hear it turning i.e. not engaging, then put the car in top gear and push it to move the flywheel to another position and then try it again. If it engages then that is the problem. It is most unlikely that the anti theft device has any bearing on the problem.
