I have just purchased a 1967 4.2 E Type 2 + 2. One of the tyres is a bit rough so I want to fir a new set. Can someone please advise what the best tyres are best to fit please? I assume radials would be best but cross plys are fitted at present.

I fitted Dunlop 185 SP50's to my 1968 2+2 on the basis that this is what it came out of the factory with. Great tyre if a little pricey. This is an H rated tyre though and so is limited to 130mph - in case you were thinking of driving faster!. There was an entire article devoted to this subject in E Type magazine I think and the Dunlop SP50 came out very well. The advice was do not be tempted to fit wider tyres because it makes the steering even heavier with barely any assistance in handling.

I own a S1 2+2 1967 for two years now and I replaced nearly new Pirelli P4000 205/65VR15 which were then fitted on the car by new Michelin XWX of the same size on CWW of 6,5 x 15".
Very expensive tyres (1.200,- ?), but a lot better than the Pirelli's especially on wet roads. With new shock absorbers (Spax) and new Polyurethane steering rack mountings (by SNGBarratt) the car gives me very sincere and prompt reactions when driving fast or slow without any travelling due to wider tyres. The steering is a bit heavy, but less difficult as with the Pirelli's and I manage it well.
If you want to get the initial feed back of the road of an E-type, you must obviously choose the smaller tyre size as Chris remarked.
