Paint for series 2 air filter container
#1 Paint for series 2 air filter container
CAn anyone suggest the correct paint ( crackle finish, hammerite or smooth) for series 2 air filter box etc please. Also , I wonder how essential it is to have rocker breather pipe fed to air filter, seems to me to make mixture more oily / I am considering using individual air filters for carbs and this would make breather redundant, where does the breather go then...to the road ? Thanks

If you are going to use individual air filters - then I would route the breather pipe into a plastic catch tank (like the racer boys do)
You CAN vent straight into the airstream under the car - but its basically spraying the underside of your car with a fine mist of oil

Why do you want to use individual filters? There are two snags to them :
i.they are usually much noisier than the standard setup
ii.you may well suffer a power loss . If you look at the factory filter box , it is quite ingenious , in that the trumpets of the drum are fed from the cold air duct on the right hand side of the bonnet . If you abandon the drum, your filters instead will receive air at underbonnet temperature , which is usually a good deal hotter than ambient, and therefore less dense

You will also need to fit richer needles as the pancake filters offer less air resistance than the standard setup.

surely there is a conflict here as the change of needles infers to me that the mixture would be too weak with the better air flow. Is not air flow the main driver for fuel intake and as long as combustion is correct, production of power. The difference in heat I would have thought is not great, but am willing to be proven wrong.
Is the opinion that the old sir filter restricted air flow and hence power, or was satisfactory ?

The original air filter provided the best balance of debris collection, silencing and power. The limitations only become evident if you start modifying things. Ideally we want the air fuel mixture ratio to be around 12.5 regardless of induction volume.
