Quick Release Steering Wheel

I'm looking into investing in a quick release steering wheel boss to adapt onto my original wheel and also wish to do the conversion myself. I believe that there are now three options/manufacturers open to us (see below) but little in the way of comparison within the forum from what I have seen, any information/advice would be much appreciated.

From what I've seen the SNG one and the one from CMC are the same, so that narrows it down to two.
There was a recent topic on here about the Superspoke one.
My observations, and this is only my personal take on the two are as follows.

CMC / SNG. Closer to the original look of the existing boss and in my opinion more in keeping with the car.

Superspoke. Better engineered but for me not as nice when viewed from the side.

I have no affiliation with either and am like you still at the research stage.

Probably no help at all. However there are a few threads on here if you look and a fee videos on YouTube.

Many thanks, you've both covered exactly what I was hoping for and having seen videos etc I am more inclined towards the aesthetics/operation more than cost, although now that there is only two options, (I did think SNGB & CMC design looked similar...... thanx Simon), the big price difference is something worth considering.

I had already exhausted the forum for information but I couldnt find anything outwith how they fit/remove and the posts are some time old now and technology does move fast so initial niggles, (horn push connectors etc), should have been sorted now or thats what I'm thinking.

Initially, I read that Superspoke wanted you to send your original wheel to them for conversion........is this still the case?

Hi Steve....I did speak to Superspoke at the Stonleigh show....he did say they were looking to have units made that will directly fit a S1/2 wheel without re drilling it...give them a call......one thing to note is that with the Superspoke unit it does bring the steering wheel about 40mm closer to the driver.....check this measurement with them...if you do go with them make sure you fit the spacer collar (ask for details) without it it is possible for the wheel to disconnect if you push on the steering wheel..........the only quick release that when viewed from the side looks the same as the original set up is the CMC/SNG....Both the Superspoke and NRG that i fitted when view from the side you can see the aluminium release unit......hope this helps

I have the CMC version and it looks stock and works faultlessly. No modification to the horn push or arrangement. If you are in doubt contact Angus Moss - he only fits the CMC version, which says it all really!

A bit worrying if the Superspoke has a slight fitment issue and, as you mention, the boss seems a little large and not really what I am looking for.

The CMC unit sounds very promising, I take it the earlier problem of changing the steering shaft at the same time is no longer the case and the boss will fit direct to original shaft & wheel with no modification.

As far as i know you still have to change the shaft......you will probably also have to go on there waiting list

You do indeed need to change the shaft as it has fewer splines, a key spline and machining to allow the locking mechanism to locate. Easy enough to do.

That'll explain the extra cost but at least its a simple enough job to do though.

Hi Steve in the first letter You said, You want to make the conversion Yourself.
In my SeriesII FHC i've made this conversion two weeks ago.
I ordered from funkypower.co.uk an NRG adapter, the thin one.
It took small amount of fiddling to adapt it to the different style horn push, but it works fine.
Later i saw this NRG-adapter at Ebay for a lower price again.
I think, for Your seriesII it will work fine.

I didn't fit one in the end as I couldn't justify the cost at the time. I may well look into them again at some stage in the future.

Hello all my fellow E-Type lovers.....once again, I have a question that I hope someone can answer. Never too old to learn. The question is simply.....why ?? Why would you go to the trouble and expense of adding a quick release to a street car ?? In my early days, I professionally drove Formula Atlantic (F2) in North America for years, and then drove in the IMSA /Rolex endurance championship up till just a few years ago. They were, thank God, equipped with quick release steering wheels. In endurance racing, they were great simply because the teams always had several drivers of assorted sizes. Much quicker pit stops. But please help me understand why you would put one in a street car ?? Thanks !

It certainly makes working on the interior of the car much easier. Cleaning, modifying, maintaining and security. Once you have one you will wonder how you managed without it.
