S1.5 Instrument Wiring
#1 S1.5 Instrument Wiring
I have a question regarding the dashboard wiring for my 1968 S1.5 OTS.
Starting at the panel light switch, I have Red/Blue to the panel edge lights ( working OK ). Then I have Red/White to the instruments (working OK ). Then the confusing bit for me is a Red/Brown connected to the Panel Resistance ( connected ) then a Red/White to the 4 X PANEL LIGHTS. What the hell are these.???
I have Edge Lights and Instrument Lights only. I guess its me being to stupid to understand the wiring diagram, If anyone could help, would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike
Let me know how you get on because I have to do mine at some point
I think the 4 small gauges are the “daisy chain” one with a spade connector
The one to the main speedo and rpm gauges go into a small diameter wrapped section of the dash loom and appear behind the main gauges

The best wiring diagrams come from Coventry Auto Components 0247 647 1217
e mail sales@xkparts.com . These books split the circuits down by function, such as panel instruments , starting , fuel , lighting, signalling , fuse boxes etc
Also the one I sent you a picture of is from Prospero’s garage in the US ..you can order it on line for your car

I have just completed the wiring in my Series 1.5. I used a complete Auto Sparks wiring loom. There were a few mistakes but I am doing a right hand drive conversion and the 1.5 is a bit of a pain as it can combine Series 1 and 2 components.
Try this wiring diagram
It’s the only one I needed. Keep in mind my car has the later rocker switches.

Tricky...I am halfway through converting my 1966 S1 2+2 to RHD.
I cant find anything really useful about the dash wiring loom on any forum. As you have recently done this, can you please share some advice.
I plan to use the original LHD loom and make any changes that may be necessary. Does the RHD loom still enter the car in the LH footwell and then run along the bulkhead to the RH side?
I have read that the LHD loom needs shortening but I am still puzzled by it. I just cant find any good photos/images of the loom for RHD. It would be really good to see a RHD loom laid out on the floor to get an idea of its route.
Any advice/photos would be appreciated

There's a series of articles on left hand drive to right hand drive conversion in the Knowledge Section which will help you along with loom layout diagrams. Some photos have been removed but the search function will still get you lots more information.
The wiring loom layout of LHD and RHD cars is fundamentally the same. The few differences are associated with the steering column and speedo/rev counter changing sides. Depending on the age of your car the order of the secondary gauges in the centre section may change but you can choose to leave them where they are.
Given the questions you're asking and the safety issues associated with altering 50 year old wiring I'd give serious consideration to buying a new RHD wiring loom from Autosparks.

My advice? Don't. You should consider that you're not going to be the last owner of this car, and when selling it the buyer will pick a price by judging the quality of the RHD conversion. If the wiring looks like a rat's nest it will make them have second thoughts.
You can buy all the looms individually from Autosparks. That loom is about £175. The wiring book is there too for £12.
