Best place for data plate stamping UK
#1 Best place for data plate stamping UK
Hi I need to purchase a data plate for an S1 4.2 built 1964 and registered 1965. I know there is an early and a late one. I think this car will be early but I will measure the rivet holes to try and match it .Where is the best place in the UK to get it stamped.

Discussed here: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php? ... ssis+plate
Classic Jaguar in the USA can supply the correct photo-etched version at $25 and will stamp it up for you for a small donation to charity.

I used minimail.co.uk to stamp my S3 plate.
I supplied the plate and they charged me £35.00 including return postage back in 2015 and was happy with the result.
Hope this helps

Bought and stamped from Robey .I know it is printed but I did not want the wait of ordering from USA. Plus I don't know if I would pay import tax . I previously for a different car bought something from China costing £28.00 and import tax was £18.00 I know it is calculated on price + postage but I was surprised at the cost .

The import duty was unlikely to have been £18. You don't say what you're postage cost was but it may have been as much as the item price.
The £18 would have been mostly VAT, which is paid on the cost of the item plus delivery cost and import duty. China has most favoured nation status so import duties are relatively low but the importer/agent needs to know how to select the correct category or your could get stung. Agent's fees can be substantial too.

BUY BRITISH !!!
I have seen and bought many data plates that were useless. The only ones I will ever buy from now on are from Classic Reproductions, which are indistinguishable from original in terms of manufacturing quality. If anybody else sells real photo-etched nowadays I suspect they buy them wholesale from this specialist firm:

Yes, I still hold to the view that a cleaned-up but battered original is worth keeping as the 'soul' of even a perfect restoration, but if you do have to buy new, thee people are the best without being the dearest.
