Hi,
I have a question about the gearbox from a series 1 and series 2.
What’s the difference? Most part-numbers are the same.
Is the series 2 gearbox an upgrade? And is it wise to change a series 1 gearbox for a series 2?
The reason I ask this is because my series 1 gearbox make a lot of noise in first gear. And I have a spare gearbox but this is from a series 2.
Thanks, Marcel

#2 Re: gearbox
Marcel, the early gear box were the Moss box without synchromesh on first gear. The second type that came in with the 4.2 engine had synchro on all gears. Some people change to the later box, it depends on how original they wish to keep the car.
I hope this helps, though if your car is a 66 is it a 4.2? Then maybe your box needs a rebuild. Some gear ratios are different, too, between the S1 and S2 4.2 gearbox.

Marcel.....As above...what gearbox do you have.........note that it isnt just a straight swap between a Moss and a 4 syncro gearbox.......the front bearing houseing on the 4 syncro box is larger so either a 4.2 bellhouseing is required or the existing "Moss" bellhousring machined to fit......if the bell houseing is changed then the starter motor/flywheel needs to be considered depending on what you use......Steve

I have a ’66 E-type with an all synchro gearbox.
During the restoration, several years ago, my gearbox gets a rebuilt.
All bearings and synchromesh rings are replaced and also the countershaft.
Everything looks fine but in the first test drive you can hear the gearbox in the first-gear.
Last year I took the engine out and let an another company take a look at my gearbox.
They reassembled the gearbox and found nothing wrong.
But when the engine was build in, it was the same story.
Now I have to remove the engine for the second time to fix this problem.
But now I want to solve this problem for good.
And I was thinking to replace the gearbox. And found one from a E-type series 2, thinking it is exactly the same. But found out that some parts are different ( e.g. the speedgears).
That’s why I want to know what the difference is between the gearbox from a series 1 and series 2, both all synchro? If there’s any?
Thanks, Marcel

The S2 box is in my opinion inferior to the S1 4.2 box(es) because the ratios are a good deal wider than on the first all-synchro boxes. What oil are you using in the box ? EP 90 is the usual recommendation but many have had success with MTL Redline

Many thanks for all your reply’s and information, much appreciated.
My conclusion is to fix my gearbox, rather to replaced it with a series 2 gearbox.
EP 90 oil is used for my gearbox.
angelw on this forum send me a pm with a solution to fix this noise in my gearbox.
Hope it will help.
