Heat shield material (ASBESTOS)

Hey, Originally the E had asbestos plates to take the heat gradient on the exhaust heat shields. I'm now looking for a replacement material for the large middle exhaust heat shield below the silencers.

I have found a material called "Steni Masterboard" that is meant for house heating cables. (not very high temps) - I think it might work anyways, since it's fire resistant.

Do anyone have a better tip or advice?

What about the shields sold by SNG, Moss, and others i guess. Do the have insulation? I know the reservoir shield does.

Also, if your original is in good codition you could use a high temp adhesive and cover the asbestos with a woven foil backed heat insulating material. Available from “racing” suppliers in a roll, I got an 18” roll i believe, in the US like Pegasus, Summit Racing, Jegs,…. You could use the material alone if you have a bare shield and just rivet it to the metal. Tough stuff. I glued it to the orig shield encapsulating the asbestos. Been good for 25 years.

I know SNG sells, I was hoping to save some cash and reuse the old plate. I just need something to absorb the heat. The old asbestos is powder and saw the trash can many years ago :(

Hi Thim.....the board you mentioned appears to be ok....also look at the insulation boards that are installed on walls where you fit a wood burning stove....Steve

What about using the material i mention riveted or glued to your existing shield without the powdered asbestos.
You saved the metal portion?
