S1 FHC Quarterlight

The holes in the quarter light where the catch assembly attaches are damaged and I wonder if anyone has come across this and may have a solution. I haven't removed any of the chrome but suspect that the frame is brass as it's non-magnetic.

Hello Phil, yes it is brass and a new piece needs to be silver soldered in and drilled . I can do that for you if you like please pm me if interested.

Thanks for the offer but I've already got JM 55 silver solder and Easy Flo flux but if you can give me any pointers that would be helpful.

Hello Phil - number 2 nozzle , clean up metal and remove chrome (obviously) . I would use a piece of 2mm brass so I could direct the flame at a heavier material and spread the heat - if you know what I mean. Mix the flux with a tiny amount of water and apply to all surfaces. When finished sand down the thicker metal to the same as the original. Practice makes perfect - good luck.

That's just what I was looking for. I understand what you mean about focusing the heat on the heavier section and allowing to flow to the lighter areas. Do you butt the 2mm brass or lap it?

Butt - practice on some other brass offcuts. The repair should be invisible when done. Be careful not to overheat the work or the thinner metal will melt real quick. You will find the 55% silver will flow into all nooks and crannies . Its very satisfying when you acquire the knack.
