#1 heating controls - dumb Q!

Post by ianc9 » Wed Nov 02, 2022 4:06 pm

The heating control valve in my S1.5 had failed and stayed open irrespective of position. I bought a new valve and was surprised to find that the closed position was when the valve lever was closest to the bulkhead and the push/pull lever on the dash was pulled out.

Intuitively I would have thought the dash lever pushed in would be the cold (valve closed) position.

Is this correct?

Ian, it’s a reflection of the controls changing from up-down to in-out as the facelift to cope with US safety specs came in. The controls are correct as you see them. If you look for photos of the earlier S1 cars you will see how their levers worked and as the same mechanism was behind the dash they had to make the S1 1/2 and S2 levers work to operate the mechanisms correctly but not necessarily intuitively.

Look at the photo in post 402 here:

Hope that helps.

Pushed in is heat on, i too thought it was counter intuitive, and the label does not help. I rarely need the heat on in my car so i am mostly driving with the lever pulled out.

Bizarre!
Grand. I'll not pull the dash apart to try to fix it then :)

Yep, same on mine. The "arrows" are kind of meaningless as instructions!
