#1 Stubborn Flywheel

Post by SimonBrown » Tue Sep 19, 2023 7:23 pm

Good Evening
I am struggling to remove the flywheel on my Series 2.
All 10 bolts are out, but despite all efforts the flywheel will not budge. The dowels seem unusual as they are tapped 5/16 unf.
I am wondering if these are somehow restricting removal?
Appreciate any ideas
Thank you
Simon

The dowels are tapped like that to facilitate removal.

Just be patient and use a lot of leverage and a heavy copper mallet.

The flywheel will be easier to remove with the dowels removed.

A cylinder slightly larger than the dowel and at least as long of the dowel can be used to extract the dowel; a suitable size socket will do in the absence of something more specific.

1.Place the cylinder/socket over the position of the dowel to extract.

2.Place a thick, strong washer on the outer face of the cylinder/socket.

3.Screw a piece of Threaded Rod, or a bolt, with enough thread length to protrude past the washer and accept a nut, into the dowel.

4. Screw the nut towards the dowel and in doing so, the dowel will start to be withdrawn from the Crank Shaft and Flywheel.

An alternative method is to use a Slide Hammer, if you have one.

Regards,

Bill

Thank you for your replies
After much hammering with a mallet and levering, flywheel removed.

Hi Steve,
Yes, decided to bite the bullet. Engine and gearbox out, solo with the help of my scissor lift. Gearbox going to Ken at Klassic trans for a rebuild. Suspect faulty clutch causing clutch drag. Oil leak from rear of engine looks like sump seal. Head now off to look at valve gear properly. The valves look very dry and I suspect a few are sticking, causing the long-standing tappety noise. I will know more when they are all out.
Appreciate your interest and hope you are keeping well
