#1 Malpassi FPR004 Failure Issue

Post by golfnut324 » Sun Jan 07, 2024 3:07 am

Hello,

Car has been up for a while so I thought it best to check under the bonnet for leaks and listen for bad sounds after starting. That's when I just happened to notice the fuel bowl was almost empty! For safety's sake I nursed it back in the garage and started looking around.

1) Fuel pump? After sitting a while I turned ignition on and got the familiar tictic...tic....tic.........tic
2) Fuel filter? I removed the glass bowl. Slight amount of sediment in bottom of bowl but found these items contained inside the filter element:

I am assuming the valve/valve spring and some kind of "cup" fell out? Reference:

Has anyone experienced this? Can/should it be reassembled or better to replace?
Looking for wise advice.

Thanks for looking.

I have a Malpassi unit in my Singer, never an issue. It appears that someone may have over cranked the adjuster screw (top center), forcing the brass piece out of its seat. If the O ring looks fine, I would be inclined to simply clean and reassemble the Malpassi, then carefully readjust the fuel pressure with a decent fuel gauge.

I'm positive that the adjusting screw hasn't been messed with. I set it to 3psi in 2015 and it hasn't been touched since, but something caused it to fall apart?
Since It has to be removed to repair I think I will just reinstall the stock filter bowl. Less chance of failure on the road.

Thanks for your thoughts Steve.
