#1 Flywheel question S2 OTS -69

Post by Pex » Mon Apr 14, 2025 12:10 pm

Is the Flywheel ring a separate part or is it integrated in the flywheel?
The high torque starter has totally ruined the thooths and I need to order either a new ring or a new flywheel.
Also, have trouble finding a new flywheel at the usual suppliers that have the part in stock.
Any tip who may have one in stock?

As far as im aware the ring gear is a seperate part..second hand would be the cheapest way to go...an ad in our wanted section or look on ebay....also try all the suppliers Rob Beere etc......what went wrong with the starter....I put up a post warning against high torque units not engageing enough....Steve viewtopic.php?f=3&t=20860&p=169962&hili ... er#p169962
Ps 4.2 ring gear but you need to check it's correct https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196778777250 ... media=COPY

SNGB have the 133 tooth ring gear C18517RG in stock. SNGB say this is compatible with your car.

Steve what's the problem with the hi torque starters? We fitted them routinely to our resto cars and I have them on all my E Types and the Mk2 without seemingly any trouble.

I searched the net and the common opinion was that the flywheel and gear-ring was one part, that's why I searched for a new Flywheel. I will find out when dismantled the engine/clutch but it looks like it's one part in the picture.

FYI... I mounted a new hi torque starter like 6 years ago but that one failed almost immediately, the bendix wheel was thrown out but did not return, floating on the shaft and damaged the flywheel ring tooths a little.
Got a new one which has been working find (with some noice) until now when it stopped workin.
When I put the old Lukas starter back I found this

Hi Andrew...did you read the link I posted above....I needed a new starter I picked up a Lucas brand from SNG as I knew there were pinion throwout engagement issues with Power lite units....when I got it on the bench it was in fact a re labled Powerlite unit.....I also checked out Wosp units.....none gave full engagent of pinion to flywheel as per an original starter...the Powerlite/Lucas only engaged 6m....I contacted SNGB who tested the units and thought 6mm was unacceptable all their units were returned to manufacturer and modified.(i doubt this is the case for other suppliers)....basically if you intend to fit a high torque unit then .ensure you measure its pinion throwout and depth of your flywheel in the bellhouseing....Steve viewtopic.php?f=3&t=20860&p=169962&hili ... er#p169962
