Toyota w58 gearbox
#1 Toyota w58 gearbox
Hi Guys, looks like I left a project too long and now after a lengthy chat with a very helpful Guy Broadspeed he informs me that because of obtaining the Ford parts that went into the gearbox being unobtainable the 5 speed has been shelved.
Shame, because at under 5k it seemed a worth while extra.
So reading through old posts I see the supra box gets mentioned, it looks like it’s possibly ok for a 2+2 but looks far too long for an OTS..(guess work tbh)
Anyone have an idea if it works, or another suitable box?
Currently running a 3.07, which is ok but just on long motorways feels like it needs to come down 1000 RPM.
Any help as ever appreciated, my winter project needs help!

I had the Broadspeed five speed gearbox fitted by them about three or four years ago. I must say for 5K that was a brilliant upgrade to the moss box which naturally I have (numbers matching) kept. Regretfully I can’t offer any help on your quest.

I reckon my mate Ron has a W58 box in his 3.8 OTS, which unfortunately is now sold.
I think a fair amount of metalwork was needed to get it to fit.
I have one in my Mk2 and it's OK but not great; fairly long throw and sloppy shift although that could be about wear on the levers rather than the box per se.

Thanks guys, I spoke with Adrian at realm and yes there’s a bit of work to do at the gearbox tunnel mainly with the crossmember. The whole kit is relatively cheap coming in at £3k.
Adrian said that in 5th with a 3.07 I’d be looking at about 2500 rpm @70 mph.
That’s kind of took me back a bit as I’m looking at probably 2700 rpm @70 at the moment in 4th with the 3.07.
Was hoping for at least a drop of 1000rpm.
Don’t seem worth the hard work tbh..
Any ideas guys?

Hi
A quick check of Toyota ratios suggests the 5th gear is 0.783:1.
So, if you have 2700rpm at 70mph with your standard gearbox 4th ratio of 1:1, you should see 70mph at around 2100rpm with the 5 speed.
Clearly, you would need to verify the ratios in Toyota 'box, and check your speedometer calibration.
Regards

Hi Paul...your calculations/speedo/rev counter may be a bit off...in a previous post you quoted 2900rpm @70... ideally use a calculator tool...

Thank you Stuart, that would make a more comftable cruising speed around 2000 Rpm @ 70.
Steve, Richfield did the restoration on the speedo and rev counter, tbh a 200 Rpm discretion is prob negligible at best on a 60 year old unit, either the rev counter or speedo there’s always going to be room there for a discrepancy, (60 year old tech.) the calculator (useful, many thanks) may well also as the calculator mentions give a incorrect reading, I found that when comparing it to the rolling road figures I had to hand the difference was some 7mph.
All i wanted as mentioned is to be doing 70mph at around 2000 rpm or less, and if it is possible with any units out there ready to bolt on..
For clarity and future reference here it is at 100mph 4100 rpm, 292 ft torque, on the rollers at Northampton motorsport. That’s about as accurate as it gets I would think, flat out at 5500 we were at 137mph.
(The calculator you posted above had me at 145mph at 5500 rpm)
As mentioned thats a std 4 speed with a 3.07.
