#1 Differential Oil Refill Amount?

Post by mtnjag » Tue Oct 07, 2025 11:46 pm

The Manual says 3.25 US Pints or 52 fl oz.
I drained mine for 30min or so after a 20 mile drive.
All I could pump in was 2.6 US Pints or about 42 fl oz or so and it overflows.
I let it settle for 20 min and tried again but no more would stay in.
The stub axle seals and rear cover gasket were replaced maybe 500miles ago so there is not a bunch of settlement in there.
I measured the drainage and that's about what came out.

So what is the normal fill for you all.

The filler plug hole is the level, when oil comes out of it then your job is done. This is dependant on if you have the car level, if the front is raised you get less in, with the rear raised you will get more oil in. Not very critical on amount but the correct grade of oil is all important. Good luck with your car, cheers John.

According to the workshop manual, the capacity of oil is 1.54 litre for a series 1 final drive unit. My experience is that 1.6 l will start to overflow, guess how I know :questionmarks:

Hi Layne, life is too short to worry about the amount of oil in your diff, as mentioned in my reply the important part is that you use the correct grade of oil for the application.

Layne,

I was mentioning the capacity just for you to buy 2 bottles in case they are 1 liter bottles. So that you won't be short of oil and have to purchase another bottle. Again, guess why I am saying that (with the poor availability of this special grade of oil in auto shops here).

Thanks Philippe but I had already filled it and was questioning whether or not the amount it took was appropriate.
I'm resolved to what the result is and appreciate the advice.
