#1 Hub Carrier Damage

Hi all,
Wondered what the considered wisdom is in relation to the damage on one of my hub carriers. Thing looked pretty good when covered in crap, having had it vapour blasted, its a thing of beauty but with a few "warts"





I've just dropped it off at a fabricators and the plan is for him to chop out the damaged area including down to and past the are where the crack extends into recess, then build it back up. :fingerscrossed: this will work.

Also both my actual hubs are damaged from appearing to have been hit directly with a hammer. I took these apart a while back, I'm pretty certain it wasnt me that did this, one splined drive came out of the hub of its own accord, the other took some persuading but I dont recall whacking it with a hammer. In addition bot water throwers, with damage noted when IRS was still in one piece are not attached to the hub, they simply sit with no fixing to the hub body. Is that correct?

Hub carriers are cast aluminium....iv had damaged ones...binned then and fitted good used ones....splined hubs arnt too expensive ..I would by new.....plenty of decent used hub carriers about.....I have a few....Steve

I would also check inside the hub carriers where its machined and the bearing race fits....you can get hairline cracks best seen if pour a bit of petrol on it as it will highlight any cracks....Steve

Hello Kev,
To build the damaged area up, would then require machining, and that would require a set up that would have the two opposing bores concentric within a small tolerance. For two off parts, that will be an expensive exercise. Find a set of good secondhand parts would be the most cost effective way to proceed.

If you have a cheap quote from the shop proposing to do the work, I would be skeptical of the accurate alignment of the two bores that contain the bearings.

Thanks Steve, Bill,
I've already started looking at replacement carriers on line, so I think we are on the same page. Most of the rebuilds I've seen on YouTube etc seem to have new splined hubs fitted as well so having sought your wisdom I'll do as suggested.
Steve can you pm me about the carriers you have available?
Also seen comments and references in videos of making sure you get right and left carriers on the correct side when rebuilding. They look identical to me or am i missing something.

Hi kev the carriers are the same left right as far as im aware.....later Jag models have a speed sensor I think so the fixing for it would be handed....I'm away from home for about 10 days I have a few hub carriers that are all cleaned up and crack free...if your in no rush I can get back to you on my return....Steve

Pm sent....just to note the splined hubs are handed so you fit the correct spinners but I'm sure your aware of that.....online the whole unit is often referred to as a "hub" which is then handed for left or right.....Steve
