#1 wiper motor bench test

Post by richard btype » Tue Mar 17, 2026 5:47 pm

Could the learned amongst us please advise how I could bench test the wiper motor before re installation in my series 1 4.2 - negative earth

I've tried the single green wire to positive and the earth wire to negative so either this is incorrect or the motor is malfunctioning...

Richard, you say it’s a 4.2 but your signature shows a date of April 62. Isn’t that a 3.8 or are you asking for another car?
Have you followed the testing instructions in the manual? Also, what source of power? A healthy battery or a 12 volt supply that may not have the current capability? Just a a couple of thoughts/questions.

Thank you Geoff and David.

It is for another car Geoff, the 3.8 is an original/tidy car, ideal for the Uk. The 4.2 is a LHD ex Canadian car which I'm restoring as a more comfortable/bespoke car for European touring with 3.07 diff/MX5 seats etc. It's not working out as originally planned however which was for the addition of an alloy bonnet, d type wheels, air con etc.

The required work to the shell proved to be far more costly than forseen, the mileage was far lower than thought so it makes more sense for the enhancements to be easily reversible and keep it within the 'originality' side of present values. Bespoke cars appear to be harder to sell on when the time comes....

I'm finding it quite interesting to note the developments between a 62 and 65 series 1 (and will update my signature in due course).
