Can somebody explain why you need a special mounting kit to balance wire wheels ive always wondered as ive balanced quite a few over the years never had a problem on my standard wheel balancer the cone fits into the front and back of the wheel is flat just like any normal wheel ive never had one back vibrating

Hi Rob.....at a tyre shop they use a taper cone on the outside of a non wire wheel......on spoke wires the outer if useing a standard type cone is a non machined uneven surface so the wheel does not sit true on the cone....the special outer fitting for wire wheels sits on the machined surface that the spinner fits on.....the inner cone for wire wheels is also at the correct angle 30deg to mate correctly on the machined inner face ...Steve

This was on the wall at Sports Motorcycles, Liverpool Road, Manchester, at around the time the bike Steve Wynne put together won the 1978 TT in the hands of Mike Hailwood.
