Dear all,
I am new to this forum and I am currently restoring an E Type Series 1.
As the cylinder has been distorted, I just got hold of a new one with a pair of camshafts.
Now, I would appreciate if you could help me in identifying the camshaft. the following numbers are stamped on it:
P 31818 A
BM4
23GO
for which car have the camshaft been used, etc.?

I don't think that any of those are identifying numbers ( although the 31818 rings some bells as possibly a late XK camshaft from the 80s) . The Jaguar number will begin with a C followed by 5 digits, and will be engraved on a ground flat area on each shaft . As a matter of interest, how many holes does the front flange of the shaft itself - not the sprocket - have ? If it is 2, it is an original style shaft , with clearances of .004 / .006, and if it has 4 holes it is the later parabolic cam for which the clearances are .012/.014

Hello,
many thanks - I have been confused by the number starting with a "P..." as I knew that the original Jaguar number starting with a "C..."
The front flange has 4 holes - I need to check the clearances in the next days.

No need to check your clearances, with four psrocket holes they are later cams. The setting for all parabolic cams are 12-14 thou for each side. Note that this is a range, not an inlet/exhaust difference like the original 0.004" and 0.006" figures were.

I have a 4.2 65/66 series 1 and am in the process of adjusting the tappets. My car has 2 hole camshafts for both inlet and exhaust, but the exhaust has a groove in the outer edge of the front flange. Does this mean I have an early cam on the inlet and a later one on the exhaust and if so should I adjust the inlet to 0.004" and the exhaust to 0.012/0.014".
I notice in Chris Rooke's book page 94-95 it appears his engine has the same arrangement and he set his to the wider gap.
