#1 single wire alternator

Post by johnhcrighton » Fri Dec 16, 2011 1:49 am

I am about to start a LHD/RHD conversion on my 66 FHC (4.2). Might as well install a new loom while I am in a mess. The opportunity arises to improve/simplify (?) the circuits.

I am unable to find a 3AW unit, nor the oil pressure/warning light sender that I expected to find on the right side of the block.

A previous owner changed the original Lucas alternator to a (more modern?) unit with no identification, but apparently a Motorola unit. Even though the present alternator appears to work OK, I am happy to put in a 'modern' one if there is some benefit in terms of simplifying the circuit, and making it more robust. I am not interested in concourse so fewer bits in the system is attractive.

Does a 'single wire' alternator imply that there is no longer a need for the 3AW, 6AR or 4TR units? I intend also to replace the ammeter with a voltmeter, thus removing the need to route the main currrent supply through the dash, but there may be other 'improvements to consider?

I am told that the answer to my wuestion is that if you use a 'modern' alternator (with internal regulator) you no longer need the 3AW, 4TR and 6AR units

John,

that is correct. However if you search this site, you will find the information you need. ALternatively, have a look at www.jag-lovers.org where you will be able to access loads of relevant information as a number of people have done this conversion already.
