Smooth and ribbed sumps??

Curious to why some etype's have a smooth sump and some ribbed? Are some earlier than others? mines a 3.8 with a ribbed sump, assuming aluminium.

All E-type sumps are ribbed from the first car AFAIK but some cars may have smooth military sumps on them like mine has. Drain plug is is a slightly better place and the sumps are cheaper if converting an XJ engine or replacing a holed original. I'm guessing the XK 150 3.8 might have had a smooth ally sump? Dunno. Earlier XKs had a smooth steel sump - maybe some are painted silver.

Thanks Peter, actually helping a friend build a replica ali Dtype at present and looking at his engine today it is very similar but numbers show its out of a mk10. The sump is smooth and a different shape to my etype, but i hear a lot of etype's have mk10 and stype engines in as ive been told they are practically the same.

Pete. I think the very early sumps were smooth.

My car is an aluminium sump painted black but smooth, all the early 3.8's had smooth sumps.

Thanks gents. I'll call my tank engine part 'early E-type' then :-). Must have been a carry-over from the XK150?

As for D-type replica, I assume it's a Realm rather than one of those square-frame Triumph jobbies? Contact me if you want any bits as I have various stuff for those if you're short of anything and I won't need any of it for my Zealia D

Pete,

My engine is a XK150S engine and has exactly the same accelerator linkages etc, the way it should be but stainless of course

Based in Poland now, we've had it a few years but only just getting around to it now... Also have a proteus C-type.
