#1 Asbestos? - plus - Bonnet fitting

Post by skiday » Wed Apr 11, 2012 11:57 am

Two unrelated question;

Is the heat shield which fits above the central exhaust baffles made of asbestos? There is a steel layer, then what is, I presume, asbestos. Now that I've changed the gearbox support for my LT77 conversion it clashes with this heat shield which now needs trimming, but if it's asbestos.....

Secondly; do you have tips for bonnet fitting. It is of course very heavy and very delicate I would be very gratefull for tips. As I have new frames there will be much fiddling with the shims before it is right no doubt and I don't have many people to help me.

Thanks

Andrew

Dave Kerr is our resident expert on shields as he makes new one's so maybe he can advise before you start cutting.

There is a bonnet fitting guide in the Forum 'Knowledge Base' under Technical Guide's.

Hi all............my only contribution to this debate is the modified version of the bonnet pins that I turned up. Dimensionally, They are the same as the std, but made out of a piece of 1 1/4 hexagon SS bar. The big head allows for turning to free it off when stuck in position and allows for a set of mole grips to pull on it whilst twisting it.

As an aside, I noticed when copying the std ones I had once bought, that the 5/8 diameter was in fact oversize and was never going to go home without destroying the nylon bearings.

This mod is possibly the best I have ever made.

Its my first time posting a photo so I hope this works.
