I have a 1966 Series 1 FHC (4.2). It was originally a US (LHD) car, which (I think) means it probably has a 3.54:1 final drive. A 5th gear would be nice on the open road - I note there is a lot of info on 5 speed options on the forum. But is a different diff ratio an easier (cheaper) option?
I would not be too worried about losing some grunt in accelerating - we mainly use the car for touring and club runs.
I am told that a Series 2 XJ6 (3.07:1) diff will slot straight into an E Type rear end. I wonder if this is true?
will an XJ6 diff slot into an E Type?

If not, would it be possible to put just pinion and crown wheel from the XJ into original E-type diff?

I put a 3.07 into my car; not sure where it came from but probably an XJ6. Great improvement; 3000rpm @ 70mph.johnhcrighton wrote: I am told that a Series 2 XJ6 (3.07:1) diff will slot straight into an E Type rear end. I wonder if this is true?

Many thanks to each of you for your input. Will dive in and secure the sprockets with rubber band or twine.
Cheers
