Series 1 FHC Windscreen

Hello

Presently have my Series 1 FHC in workshop having a new windscreen, so far the technicians have tried about 3 different screens which don't properly match or fit as well as the old one. I know this is a comman problem but does anyone recommend a certain make which is most similar to the original?
I haven't managed to source a triplex screen yet, are these any good and who may have them?
So far have used pilkington (too big), SC parts screen is a little too big as well?
Asked SNG which make they used but the salesman didn't want to reveal, does anyone know the make they supply?

Strange coincidence, John. I contacted CMC yesterday, to see how things are going. They are completing the restoration of my ?65 Coupe, and they can?t find a windscreen to fit either?they?ve tried 3 so far!. They too are fed up with the aftermarket suppliers, and as my car has never been welded or had an accident, it?s pretty obvious where the problem is.

I?ll let you know if / when / how it gets resolved.

Just as a possible contact, try Normon Motors in Hampstead area London. They found me a new windscreen for my 73 OTS earlier this year, it was fitted by autoglass using my existing sreen rubber with no problems. Their number 02074310940 Alfi. P.s ask for Ken or Mike.

alfi: thanks for your contact, I spoke to Ken who was helpful and happy to give advise, I got the impression they use a general supplier and take pot luck on what make turns up.

Apparantly my car is getting another try with a pilkington screen next week which is what Andrew Turvey (CMC) seemed to think was one of the more reliable screens.
I will wait with fingers crossed and report further (there is talk they will have the screen grounded/shaved a little to help fit)

Spoke with CMC today and they have fitted one to my car now, so the good ones are available. I'm going up next week to check progress, so I'll find out what make they used.

Hopefully it might be a pilkington!!
Last week Andrew said they had just had a pilkington screen in for a FHC which they hadn't tried fitting (at the time) on the car it was meant for, this might have been yours.

It was mine, it did fit and it is a Pilkington. Andrew told me that when they are rebuilding a car, they usually trial fit a windscreen when the shell is in bare metal, and adjust the metal to fit the screen! No such option with my car as it's painted. Just shows the variation that occurs in low-volume repro items...my dislike for repro continues!

Went to see my car yesterday and they had a pilkington screen just in (I think from sng with rubber) and attempting to fit on Monday. Mine is also painted so not much room for error, however they still think they may have to do some grinding!
Fingers crossed it will just simply fall in place!!!!!

Windscreen update.

The latest Pilkington glass didn't just fall in! However the rubber supplied from sng along with a "swiss lamex" screen (no other names visible on screen) which had previously been tried now fits OK as far as the technicians were concerned.
When I saw the finished job I was pleased, noticing primarily the sides of the screen were accurately parallel with the frame pillars.

For info: having seen 3 different screens I noted the pilkingtons to have a sharper curve going from both side edges to top edge. I have kept my old screen with the thought to use as a template should I have to go through this again!!!

Any further updates on screen replacement?
Seems Pilkington are the best?
My screen has two small chips near the edge of the steering wheel circumference. One 15 mm the other 20 mm. May be deemed a mot failure. On the border-line.

If I have to go to Autoglass, for an insurance job, can one specify they use a particular type of screen? e.g. Pilkington.

Rubber seal from sngb?

The best fitting screen for my car ended up being the "swiss lamex" which was sourced from SC parts together with a rubber seal sourced from SNG Barrett.

Autoglass in Guildford who fitted the screen had the car for 3 weeks+ before the job was completed. Although I was happy with the final outcome (partly because it only cost ?50), next time I would seriously consider spending the ?400 quoted by a "Classic Car" windscreen fitter and have the confidence they are more experienced with "Classic fitting". My insurance company would only pay up to ?150 towards the cost for a non-approved fitter however next time, as I suggest, I will probably go that route.

Regarding specifying, initially Autoglass used their own supplier and after finding it unsuccessful tried my suggestions regarding suppliers, from memory the pilkington glass that didn't fit was from their own supplier.

I have had real problems with my FHC screen. I tried a new one from Autoglass. It was fresh from Pilkingtons . After 2.5 hours they got it in, and then told me that it was likely to break on the first bump, because the degree of curvature was insufficient - indeed the seals at the rear lower edges were standing proud by about 1 inch each side. They asked to try my old screen, which went in in 3 minutes ( I am not exaggerating) . We left it in, and although they obtained no fewer than 3 further screens , they rejected all of them.

CMC have reported similar problems, so I do not believe it is Autoglass which is the problem

If you can get away with it Nick, leave it alone. It may be worth talking to Autoglass to see if they can fix the chips in situ...I had one done on my everyday Jag and the repair is invisible.

Just to expand on my post, the Autoglass people told me that Pilkington's produce the glass by cutting from a template and then store it as a flat sheet . When one is ordered , they then put it in the furnace and bend it ( they hope) to shape. If this is correct, then it tends to explain why we are all having such difficulty with extreme curvature screens such as the FHC, which is really a wraparound screen

Expanding on my experience with Autoglass (Guildford) after fitting their own supplied glass (Pilkington), when it didn't fit they went about refitting the old cracked screen and wanted to offload the car back to me. Fortunately with a little persuasion they did try other srceen and rubber seal suppliers I suggested but clearly this was not their preferred option.

Although the Autoglass employees were polite the novelty of a "classic" to work on quickly wore off. For this reason I feel a "classic" specialist maybe a safer bet especially as we know the FHC windscreen takes patience.

Unfortunately, because I know, it is the satisfaction of utilising our insurance that often determines our route.

Due to excessive pitting on the windscreen of my S2 2+2 I now require a replacement as driving towards the late afternoon sun is impossible.
Would anybody know the best supplier for the screen on a 2+2?
