The winding in my series II tacho is fried, is there anyone out there that repairs these? or what is the best alternative?

When you say "winding" what exactly do you mean ? The common failures in these are the capacitors and sometimes resistors . They are easy to replace and readily available from electronics stores

Chris, I'm no electronics expert but the coil/winding is scorched and the wiring from the plug into the tacho is scorched back to , but no farther than the plug.

Ah, that is not uncommon, because the white wire carries the whole current for the ignition all the time the engine is on . You could try replacing the white wire with some new, looping it through the sensor in exactly the same way as the old wire. Has the tacho ceased to work, and does the engine still run ?

Check also the green wire which provides the 12v for the instrument electronics themselves - if this does not have 12v you will get no reading

Also, can you point out which of the internal components are fried as shown here

Chris,
I'm a long way from running the engine. Getting ready for paintwork in the next month. Into third winter on a total rebuild. Wanted to get most of the mechanicals sorted before I painted, don't trust myself around nice paintwork with spanners. Was testing for spark when i discovered white wire through tacho was fried, investigated and found white and green wire had bonded, small meltdown had taken a coil and ancillary parts with it. Quite a few bits fried. might try some of the recommended contacts.

#8 Tacho

Hi,
The series 2 type was used on the original Lightweights (no Tacho generator) which are obviously very rare with a front face red band starting at 6000 rpm. However Andrew at CMC told me he had used an XJ 6 (not sure which series) internals to make a period tacho for their "14th" Lightweight 4 GXO. So, it may be cheaper to find a XJ 6 unit and swap the internals, you could slave one in to check serviceability.
Also works for the earlier Series one cars if you have tacho generator issues and is not too difficult to do.
