I can tell you that my 4.2 with 3.07 and standard diff does exactly 70mph at 2850 RPM

I had mine calibrated by 'Speedy Cables' in Wales, which is pretty essential if you're changing the gearbox I would have thought. It is now bang-on.

I must check out how my car compares for revs at the same speed, although it's not often I get to 5th gear in the Isle of Wight!

Which reminds me - isn't '5th Gear - now on ITV4, just total cr*p! If Channel 5 didn't want it any more it should really tell Mr Needell and Ms Henderson-Butler something!

The JT5 uses the exact tooth count speedo gears the factory 4 speed has. So if your speedo is off it is not the gearbox. Angle drives also have certain ratios, make sure you are always using an agle drive for the 6 cylinder E-type. Many people have installed JT5 units without dropping the rear. Sliding the driveshaft through the tunnel and dropping the yoke in the transmission from the top is the way most people do it. You can also grind the case is you need more clearance.

thats 4.2s for you. My 3.8 does 74mph with a 3.07 diff at 2850rpm :D

Think your missing out on that grin factor if you like those lower revs ... .been told this happens as you get older....have a box and o/d sitting in the garage to put on but just dont want to lose that E type driving experiance even down the motorway.....PS now the fuel is cheaper make the most of it....

The issue reminds me of driving my RS2000 when I was younger. King of the road. Yes topped out at 115mph flat out in forth but you really felt that you were driving. I don't mind a few revs to be frank. Cruising on both UK and European roads now is max 90 mph average so I reckon on balance standard revs and gearing is ok

That's why I bought an S type OD Box Steve, the non OD ratios are exactly as per the standard S2 4sp, I can have all the high revs I need whenever I want, then flick the OD on to relax.

Hi Ian.....must have a chat before Xmas...will call you....was only stirring it up really...im sitting in my comfy chair with my slippers on :D ....just cant face pulling the engine to fit the box.....feel like doing a bit of charity work for me.....

That's interesting Andrew; I thought the 3.8 was slightly lower geared than the 4.2, and of course has a slightly higher red line start at 5500 rather than 5000. I thought that the higher revs allowed for the lower gearing. Is all this not the case, or is your car running on higher gearing than normal?

4th is 1:1 in all the boxes.

My 4.2 has a 3.07 diff. My 3.8 has a 3.54.

Redline is related to the engine not the gearing.

Andrew - any recommendations for sourcing a 5 or even 6 speed kit for a V12 in Australia?? Oh that is cost effective?

15 years ago I put a 5 speed Getrag off a 5 litre Commodore on the back of my engine but is really a home made job that sort of worked OK but now I am thinking of getting something more professional in the car.
