#1 Poor Petrol Pipe to Fuel Filter Body Connection

Post by JC » Thu Apr 07, 2016 6:50 pm

On my SII, I'm replacing a section of the petrol pipe that goes the length of the car from the fuel tank into the fuel filter.

It's the flared connection into the fuel filter body that giving me grief. Ive flared some pipe, but it when I tighten up the end pipe bolt fully it clearly doesn't press home the flared connection enough and so the pipe is still slightly loose.

The filter body looks fine and so I suspect that either, I've created an incorrect flare or I'm using the wrong sized pipe.

Does anyone have any of the following
  • A link to an actual picture of the correct flare - I searched www in vain
A specification of the pipe that I should be using
    An alternative explanation
Cheers, JC

JC, the pipe should not be flared, it should be plain with an olive on the end.

Purchase the olive from your local plumbing/gas supplier and not the usual suspects to save yourself the normal 500% mark up because it?s ?for an e-type?.

Before you make up the pipe including the correct olive, you might also want to check the brass fitting that screws into the filter housing.

I had problems obtaining a seal on the olive due to an incorrect brass compression fitting. The one I was supplied had a shoulder section which wasn't threaded which resulted in only a small amount of thread being engaged before it bottomed out on the olive. It makes it easier to cross thread and also possibly cause a fuel leak as there's insufficient clamping force.

The correct fitting (top) is threaded to the end:

Chris

Yes I had exactly the same problem, I couldnt find the right one so machined the shoulder off mine and it was fine then.
