Brake line terminations.
#1 Brake line terminations.
The next part of the rebuild of my 1968 OTS is the replacement of the brake lines with 3/16 Kunifer. Regarding the shape of the terminal ends, should this be double flared or bubble flared ??? My " cheapie" flaring machine does both.
Thanks for your help

You asking the question worries me Mike. You obviously have to match the fittings concerned and be able to work out which is which.
No offence Mike, but how many brake lines have you made before? These are quick cars. You sound like a pre-formed kit might be more up your street if you think a cheapo tool and modest/no experience is enough to do an E-type right first time.
Take care and every success, whichever option you choose.

Hi Peter
Thanks for your reply. Sorry I should have been more specific with my enquiry. Some of the end fittings are quite obvious, for example an end fitting to a flexible brake hose, this can be easily seen and the required end fitting made. I was thinking more of which end fitting should be used on for example a three way union, where I cant see the inside of the fitting ( bubble or double flare )
Again thanks for the input and thanks for all of you valuable input on the forum
cheers

Mike
Good luck with a cheap brake tool working on kunifer pipe
It is not as easy as working with copper
Automec supply a kit for etypes with all pipes made up for less than the cost of a decent brake flaring tool.
I really don't know why you would bother making your own?

Because if you are a bit OCD like me, you may want to run the pipe through a straightener which you can't do with the ends on. Plus heaven forbid you damage one piece of a pre made kit, can you buy just one piece.jivili wrote:Mike

What if you've upgraded the brake system and need custom lengths and fittings?
All that aside and especially with cunifer, as mentioned above, a good quality flaring tool and some previous experience are a must.

I used one of these to make my pipes with:
http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/On-Vehicle ... GwodYZwIeg
It can make excellent single and double flares in Kunifer Copper Nickel pipes.
Most are single, but some are double on the E-Type.

Hi Paul.....where are you useing single flares for cunifer........my understanding is that single flares are not acceptable for high pressure braking systems as the flare is thin and liable to crack.....the double flare uses more material and much stronger

Hi Steve,
Off the top of my head I cannot say where I used single flares on the E, as it was about a year ago now.
I have made up brake pipes for several different cars, so it is possible that I made them for one of them.
Where did you get the information that making up single flares in copper/nickel was not acceptible?
Paul

Some of those cheap flaring tools are just horrible. You'll be lucky to get a good flare.
