Clutch master cylinder nut access
#1 Clutch master cylinder nut access
I need to replace the clutch master cylinder on 1970 S2 Coupe (LHD). The job is straightforward except for the very first step. I cannot get access to the lower of the two nuts that hold the cylinder in place. I can't get a wrench or box spanner on it, nor is there any room to even turn a spanner if I do. Any tips, or any suggestions about how to get this nut off, or the minimum amount of disassembling of nearby components? Thanks.

It's not too bad of a job. First, remove the reaction valve from the front of the MC. Then remove the front hydraulic pipe from the MC and you should be able to reach that nut with a socket wrench and an extension. If you're removing the clutch MC, then access to that brake MC nut can be made from the side. I just finished replacing my clutch slave cylinder; now THAT's a fun job!

Doh! I just re-read your post and realized that you were asking about the clutch MC.
And, no, I haven't been drinking! The answer is still pretty much the same, remove the reaction valve from the brake MC, but don't remove its hydraulic line. Removal of the reaction valve is straight forward. Just remove the screws on the front of the reaction valve and remove the disc. You'll then see two bolts (set screws) which hold the base of the reaction valve to the front of the MC. Remove them and the base and you should have access to that lower nut on the clutch MC with an extension on a socket wrench.
Be very careful when you remove the reaction valve so that you don't lose any of the parts inside, particularly that little piston which the reaction valve activates.
