Hi Trev....that very much depends on tbe position of your distributor but the fireing order is 1,5,3,6,2,4 so No1 piston nearest to windscreen get it to top of its compression stroke and look at where the position the rotor arm is pointing at, thats 1......then continue Anti clockwise around dizzy 5,3,6,2,4

Trev, you should seriously consider buying a manual. This is all basic stuff.

I have the Jaguar Service manual (Series 1 E type) and could not find reference to the firing order in the whole manual?
Where or what page is it please?
Also Is there on this very informative forum a picture to show ignition setup, like 6 pots in a row numbered 1 - 6 (left to right) and the distributor shown in correct orientation with terminals numbered in firing order ??
For me, This would tell me instantly how it should be. (I could draw this and upload it for the forum once its confirmed correct) or I would be surprised if it does'nt exist somewhere ??
I know its basic stuff, but only ever driven (and worked on!) a v12 never a 6.
Thanks for any information provided.
Regards
Keith

As Steve said, if you turn the crank by hand so that No. 1 Cylinder is at the top of it's compression ratio, the rotor arm on the dizzy will point to No. 1. Then you number them in an anti clockwise manner, 153624. This way you can be certain that it is correct for your engine.

I remember there is a diagram in the Haynes manual showing what you ask, but don't have mine with me at the moment.

Hi Keith..look at page B.8 you cannot put numbers on your diagram of the dizzy....you have to look at where the rotor is pointing......this then fires the cylinder thats on its compression stroke

Prepared to be shot down here, but at (10 degrees before) TDC on the firing stroke, doesn't the rotor arm point to number 6 front cylinder not number 1 at the back?

Yes and no. It depends which of these two is on its compression stroke. One will be 360 degrees of crank rotation from the other. Or 180 degrees of dizzie rotation.

Yes agreed, but the service manual instructions for setting the ignition timing states that the engine should be set to (10) before tdc on the firing stroke of the front cylinder (6), ie the rotor arm is pointing to 6 and 6 is firing not 1

Hi Paul...yes you are correct.....the original poster asked where no1 lead went on the distributor so the answer was with no cylinder on the comp stroke.it goes to where the rotor is pointing.........i think the confusion comes from some wanting a defined position on the distributor eg 2 o/clock.....but this can be a bit vague.....also that the crank goes around twice....so if you say set to 10deg befor tdc on one revolution it will be 1 on its comp stroke and the next revolution it will be 6

Thanks Guys, and with Pauls' comment here, I have numbered the dizzy and believe I have it correct to setup and drop in your dizzy in the right orientation.. Please confirm it is correct (or not!).

Hi Skippy....yes that look correct so long as your no 6 piston is up on its compression stroke

Yes, that is correct. Here is the diagram from the Haynes manual.
