Which Tires ?
#21 Re: Which Tires ?
Hello again
thank you all for your continued replies and sorry for my late response I away on holiday with limited internet time.
I think I will be going for the Vreds as they seem to have a good response from those who have them and at half the price of most of the others it leaves a little in the bank for the other things that need doing!
thank you all again for taking the time to reply.
Best Regards
Grant.

We are finishing this car for my late father my brother phoned a e type parts company and he was advised to go for a different size wheel. Are these wheels going to look silly on a series one?

Yes! Fit 5" wide wheels and then use 185VR15 tyres from Dunlop, Pirelli or Vredestein. If you use modern low profile rubber like 205 70 15 you will be lowering the already low E-Type by a further 1" so expect to ground on speed bumps etc. The steering will be heavier and you will loose the gorgeous ride comfort and sublime road holding of the car. People claim that 185 tyres make the car look odd but that argument is dispelled with Dunlop SP Sport tyres because they give the illusion of width because of the tread pattern. If you want something a little more aggressive fit 5.5" wheels with the same 185 tyres. The ride will not be as compliant (you are stiffening the side walls) but steering response will be sharper.
If you want higher performance fit Michelin XVS 185VR15 but they are expensive and the soft rubber tends to wear quickly although the handling is incredible.

Agreed, if you need new wheels hence the suggestion earlier in the thead to consider, plus the wheels will be strongerHeuer wrote:If you want something a little more aggressive fit 5.5" wheels with the same 185 tyres. HI Mike
thanks for that I think I've made up my mind to go for the Dunlops as well, although they are more expensive it not something I will replace that often and they do look good.
Im hoping to have her ready for the Sad Case last Tuesday of the Month at the silver spur if you fancy a drive out and meet up ?
Mine is not 100% but should be ready by then if not before.
Grant.

Hi Grant,
Good call, the Dunlops are great - really happy with mine.
Yup, mine should be back "On the road" by then ready for the last Tuesday Sadcase meet, be good to meet up, keen to see how you are getting on.

I don't quite share David's opinion.
I like driving the 205/70 VR 15 on my Ser. 1.5 and I don't think steering is to heavy - not even when parking, which is not the best to do with an E-Type anyway.
I personally like the looks of the 185s, but mainly because they are looking so skinny. The 205s look more in place, for me a little more boring.
The diameter of the 205/70 is 0,9cm smaller than the 185(/80), so your car will sit 4,5mm deeper. If that causes a problem in your daily driving routine you might consider fitting all terrain tires.
The dynamic rolling circumference of a 205/70 is 1% smaller, so you don't need to worry about speed- and tripmeter.
In the end I think the price is relevant. And you get a good quality 205/70VR 15 cheaper than a 185/80VR 15, so you can afford to buy a new set more often to keep a good quality holding your car on the road.
Of course this argument is weak if you have good 5" rims, that are good for 185s but not for 205s.

Hi
Here is our page with the options available if you use the tabs at the top http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/ja ... type-tyres
Out of interest this our French E-type page https://www.longstonetires.fr/pneu-voit ... -type.html which demonstrates the tyres in a more pictorial manner which you might like.
I'm a big advocate of sticking with the right size and fitting a period carcass that is developed to compliment the engineering of the car, rather than a modern tyre developed to excel in a different environment. (modern car with loads of camber and caster etc, all over come by very clever power steering).
On the English page i have tried to develop a tyre pressure chart. I would be very interested to hear any feed back
