Thought about vibration polishing? Obviously used for alloy wheels, but should work on any alloy. Only high gloss though.

Yes Steve, so I did ! Will ask him.

Maybe someone could send their carbs for this kind of treatment :

but not this, which would have been better titled "how to turn scrap into damaged scrap".

Moving on from cleaning the alloy, I shall be interested to learn how you will drill your new butterfly spindles for the control levers. Burlen supply the spindles undrilled and suggest one drills 'em by hand with the spindle installed in the carb body.

Not my idea of a good way to do it.

With mine, I tried to make a jig so that I could do the drilling on a bench drill but it is really hard to get the correct alignment between the butterfly and the lever. I got one wrong when I rebuilt my carbs but got it right on reversing the spindle and drilling the other end. It does not need to be perfect perhaps but near enough for the adjusting/stop screws to be effective.

Yes, I'm being spared that dilemma because my spindles and bushes are in excellent condition.

I would have thought cross-drilling these would require a proper jig that clamped the spindle and guided the drill down a true diameter ?

Maybe someone with experience of this could chip in ?

For those looking to confide this kind of work to a professional, here again are David Lonsdale's contact details.

I always use a vertical/ turret milling machine to drill the holes in the shaft, also you need a taper pin reamer as the pins are tapered . I can clamp the shaft in a vice & plot the hole in the centre of it , it does help having a machine shop.
It is worth going to find your local machine shop & get them to drill them for you.
Neal.
