Can confirm these spray-gun filters do the business.

However after a couple of years the "grip" on the 5/16" or 8mm pipe isn't quite so tight.

I decided that having the pick-up pipe fully deep in the sump was probably not a good idea, as it left no safe volume for water to accumulate, so I cut 2¨off the copper and then "pegged" the filter through it so that it no longer relies on the filter's grip to hold it in place.

No, I have no idea what IKEA product yielded the neat little pin, a gem hidden amongst all the hardware I never threw out !

They thoughtfully made its length just short of the sump-tube inner diameter.
