Wheel spinner quality.

I had to go into the garage and get it out of the spare wheel. Not much use leaving it on the bench!!

Mine is the 11-716, 2 white nylon faces.

A bit off the current topic, but the most common issue that's encountered with new, After Market Spinners is the fit to the taper and thread, resulting in them being hard to tighten properly and creaking.

With the Coordinate Measuring Machines and CNC Turning Centres that are around today, there is no excuse for the manufacturers not getting this detail right. It's not a case where they are designing something from scratch, all they need to do is copy what worked in the past.

Before we even bother to use a new, After Market Spinner, we re-machine the the taper detail and chase the Thread a little further in the Z axis. This is infinitely easier to do when the part is first machined as the second time around it's a difficult outside shape to deal with to get taper and thread features running true. Regardless, we have developed a method that makes setting the part up reasonable easy and re-profile the inner detail using data obtained from a spinner off an original, very low mileage S1 car.

Why the manufacturers of these poor quality parts can't get it right, who knows?

I do, because I asked Orson Engineering why they got them so wrong in terms of machining, shape, weight and markings. Their answer "We have been making them this way for 30 years and no one else has complained".

DO NOT BUY after market spinners from any vendor. Good originals can be found and engraved/dressed/chromed without difficulty.

The spinner was still firmly attached to the wheel as it overtook the stricken car. Broken stub axle was my thought.

As I passed the SC Parts stall at the FOS and saw a huge display of spinners for various cars including Jaguars, I thought of this thread.

Further to my initial post, and after some discussion and returning the problem wheel spinner to MWS. I am pleased with the outcome and today I have received a replacement following their inspection.
All credit to them, and from now on will only use the adapter to remove and tighten the spinner.
I’ll keep an eye out for a good original set of spinners though, and get them re-chromed.

FWIW I have just put a new set of MWS spinners from SNGB on my MK2.

They are a perfect fit. New rear hubs and original front hubs.
