You might also find that part #25 above (the plate bit at bottom left as referred to by Steve in his post) has sharp edges and so binds (when hot). It wants to be free to fall over backwards when the little piston pushes it back on release of the brakes. Smearing red grease into the end there would do no harm.

Stripped the master cylinder out

So options are to purchase a new assembly or rebuild this one - but I need a circlip.

You've done well. Getting the plastic retainer ring out can be very difficult.

It's worth trying to rebuild this one but you need to be absolutely sure you work out what's binding. You can't buy the plastic components, only the rubbers, so a new unit still has some attraction.

The circlip will be generic; it's only there to hold the retainer ring in.

If you get desperate I have a couple of these in my shed; I can make measurements etc.

Its a shame,

I see this sentiment repeated ad nauseum on Jaguar forums, and frankly it wears thin after enough repetitions.

I think that it's worth considering that we are very fortunate that the vast majority of parts for our niche 60 year old cars are available at all, in any form.

We've all had the experience of the odd part that wasn't up to scratch but 99% of them are good, and keep our cars going with minimal effort on our part.

After a while, complaining about it reflects more on the purchaser than the supplier.

I'm involved with a group who maintain and restore veteran cars from the early 1900s. We spend days making parts for the cars that if they were E types could be bought off the shelf. If we can get one to copy. Or a drawing. Or a photo.

This week I'm rebuilding an IRS on one of my cars. I've been able to order EVERY part in one go from a single retailer. They'll be here next week. How good's that.

Sometimes, I think you need to be cognisant of your blessings.

So to the poor OP whose thread has been hijacked, personally I'd just buy a new master cylinder confident in the overwhelming likelihood that it will work just fine.

Assuming that your master cylinder is genuinely from an S1.5 , and has not been substituted with something else the brake cylinder master repair kit , including the piston assembly complete , AND a circlip, is part number C26767RK available from Barratts France for Euro 64.28

I disassembled the master cylinder, reassembled in correct order and all sticking has gone. I also bled the system using the catheter syringe method and have a pretty good pedal now. Not perfect, but I'm ok with it.
