Can anyone shed any light on my problem then ? Carb n?3 (front ?) almost always floods from the breather on start-up, but requires a simple tap with a plastic hammer (or even my fist, in a hotel car park this morning !) - whereupon it's totally petrol-tight, and the pump goes quiet.

There's nothing wrong with the float, and I'm wondering if it's not just the needle that is binding slightly in its bore, getting off to cock, and needs the jerk to sit straight.

I'm tempted to change all three needles and seats, until now I've always kept them fresh with an occasional lapping with Solvol Autosol and can't remember when they were last new.

All observations welcome, including which is the best place to buy new ones - Burlen ?

Burlen are the best . I find that if you look at the needles and seats under high magnification , unless they are the modern viton tipped type you usually find that they have ground concentric circles on each other which cause leakage and/or sticking . If that has happened, then they are probably so worn that the needle is perhaps tilting slightly in the bore of the housing and thus jamming - hence your tap with a screwdriver doing the trick. They are so easy and cheap to replace that I would not hesitate to do so
