That's what I was looking for! Thanks Mark.
Thanks to Everyone in this chat, just about everyone's comment helped sort this out for me, and remind me of an odd thing about my engine when I rebuilt it a few years ago..
Windy rant follows..!!
In rebuilding my engine, I noted positions of everything and pulled it to bits. On rebuild, With 1 and 6 pistons at tdc and the dizzy drive gear slot closer to 2 o'clock than 8 o'clock (as it was), I was about to put the head back on and thought I should consult the manual! Hmm, the dizzy drive gear slot (down the dizzy hole) should be closer to the 8 o'clock position (strange!) Ok, so rotate engine 360 degrees, pistons in same position but dizzy drive slot now correct position closer to 8 o'clock, strange but anyway I finished assembling the engine.
Well, a few days ago I'm ready to put dizzy in and got a bit lost, My assumption was that the rotor of many dizzy's would point to number 1 cylinder when lined up with some mark on the dizzy housing, well there is a big/wide cap alignment tang over on the vac diaphram side - bingo, that has to be it... But my dizzy wouldn't go in... Today I've checked a few other dizzy's I have and discovered they were different to my original in that, at a previous engine rebuild, someone must have put the head on with the dizzy drive slot 180 degrees out and to save taking the head off again, they "fixed" the problem by taking the dizzy drive dog off the dizzy and putting it on 180 degrees around! Not a real problem, the engine would have run previously, but when you line things up as per the manual, it didn't make sense to me! I've "re-aligned" the dizzy so everything is how it should be now.
Thanks again Guys.
Regards
Keith

Hi Mark,
Its page B28 into the Jaguar E Type service manual 3.8L / 4.2L.
you find this in the "E Type Knowledge" last line "Technical information and documentation".
But look serie 1 . This information is commun serie 1 or 1.5 or 2 so they don't repeat it .

I can echo that comment by Skippy about the dizzie drive dog having been put in 180 degrees out when the engine was rebuilt. For the same was done to my engine when rebuilt by a very well known company.
I was trying to work out why an overhauled dizzie would not fit correctly. Then saw the drive 180 deg out!
The dizzie had then been altered to give the correct orientation of the rotor arm.
My overhauled dizzie has gone in but with the HT leads revised, 1 to 6 etc. At least I saw it before cursing the Dr!!
Who would believe the things we find
Geoff
