What number is stamped on the rectangular iron boss near the top cover number stamping?
The gearbox is extremely UNlikely to have had an overdrive added as the only source would be an overdrive gearbox donor. It is far more on likely to have the top switched between boxes to make an XJ box fit an E-type console.
If the alloy cover stamped number matches the adjacent iron casing stamping then my hunch is wrong....
