Great info. Hope to have some results Friday. That Jag filter looks good.

#42 Re: E SI with XJ6 SIII oil filter housing-filter bypass?
Have torn apart 4 filters(Hastings and Baldwin are the same filter with diff color paint made by the same mfg)-Jag EBC9658, WIX 51231, Hastings LF104/Baldwin(Hastings does make a larger filter(LF105) that is shown as a V12 application but is same as the 104, just longer), and Hengst H24W07. Couldn’t include the Fram 2995A as it doesn’t appear to be available in the US. The Purolator, Bosch, and Motorcraft were much smaller filters and I eliminated them on that characteristic. I apologize, this got kinda long. Please excuse the errors.
I feel my result is the Jag filter looks the best. And in light of that and the hot oil eng test bed results reported above looks like Tom was right, Jag OEM appears to be the way to go. With Hengst a strong second. The Jag filter I had was made in Italy. Dimensions are approximate and rounded. I’ve included a few of the pics I took and here’s a brief rundown. I have more pics and notes/dimensions if anyone is interested. I know, I have way too much time on my hands, but there’s a reason for that.
Size-Jag is slightly bigger than the rest @4.8”h x 3.8d, Hengst, WIX, and Hastings similar at about 4.3”h x 3.7”d.Weight-Jag heaviest, then Hengst, then Wix-Hasting
Unfiltered oil Inlet holes in base plate/filtered oil holes into center tube to eng-Jag and Hengst seem to have some engineering of the hole configuration and size whereas Hastings and WIX punch a bunch of holes for a uniform look. I did the math on them but won’t include that here.
Can’t comment but I guess I would go with the considered approach.
Note that Hengst has double barrel. The outer tube you see in the pic with two sets of holes, and the inner tube with one set of holes at the bottom(opposite threads) end similar to the Jag tube but with less hole area.
Drain Back valve-
-Jag has a really nice drainback valve that is a light weight rubber membrane over the inlet holes with an integral to cartridge spring loaded disc that is pushed back with oil flow under pressure from pump and then pushes the membrane down on the holes to seal the rubber membrane when pressure stops. Tried to show it in the pic but it’s not too clearly shown
-Hengst-has a nice valve too with a separate diaphragm spring that sits on top of the thin membrane with similar function as the Jag
-WIX has a heavy silicon membrane with a loose plastic collar between the filter cartidge and membrane.
-Hastings has a heavy rubber membrane with a plastic collar similar to WIX
Compression spring between canister and cartridge applying pressure to the filter cartridge keep it tight to fill plate.
Jag-Heaviest coil
Hengst-stamped stainless
WIX-Heavy coil
Hastings-Heavy coil
Cartridge Filter Media efficiency-they all appear to be a similar paper composite material. WIX claims 90% filtration of particles 20u or larger, Hastings 50% 18u or larger/85% 25u or larger, Jag and Hengst-can’t find any specs
Filter Media amount-Big difference, sq inches are approx. Have a pic with Jag, Hengst, WIX stretched out. Length is stretched out. All are nicely glued to end caps with regular pleats but big diff in amount and of course density of pleats.
Jag-148”long, 500sq”, 86 pleats
Hengst-137”, 462 sq”, 86plts
WIX-90”, 286sq”, 60 plts,
Hastings-75”, 225sq”, 45 plts, once media and end cap brace removed one end-plate fell off.
Bypass valve-all have the bypass valve at the bottom (opposite threads) end of cartridge. Slightly different spring stiffness which I would think related to the flow rate of filter and Jag’s by-pass spec but who knows so here’s a “feels like” rating. Jag and Hengst had strongest internal capture of the coil spring and valve button.
Jag-less stiff, rubber sealing disc
Hengst-Stiff, rubber sealing disc
Wix-Stiff-hard plastic sealing disc, published spec at 22#
Hastings-less stiff, metal disc, published spec at 20#
Top (inlet)Plate-all were fairly thick and heavy.
Jag-Heaviest metal
Hengst-next heaviest
WIX-next
Hastings-lightest/thinnest metal.
Case-Jag at about .018”, Hengst .021”, Wix .018”, Hasting .016”

Simon,
Those Fram PH2995A pictures look just like the JAG filter construction.
Do the inner tube holes go all the way down or just at the top like the Jag?

Hi Layne,
Great pics and info. Funnily enough, just out of curiosity I ordered a genuine Jaguar filter from Barratts. On initial inspection it looks exactly like the Fram PH2995A one. Viewed internally you can see the same pressure reIief valve, corugated metal inner support tube, anti drain back valve, number of holes etc. I'm not sure about your's (Jag OE) but mine says "made in Italy". If I get chance, I'll post pics up this weekend.
Edit, just seen you mention above "made in italy" too.
Based on your dissection pictures and my visual inspection, I suspect that the European Fram PH2995A and the Jaguar filter are one and the same. Barratts are selling the Jaguar one at £11 so for me it makes sense to go with that one.

Appears to be. Looked at the top plate of the cartridge compared to your pics and it's the same. Looks like a good choice.
I bought mine from a supplier here for $20 incl freight but I think Barratts US sells them for $26+ freight. Might be cheaper to get from the UK!

Footnote:
Terrys sells the Fram PH2995A for $11.21. The salesperson said it is a PH2995A made in Italy not the std orange PH2995 typically available in the US

Terry's Jag advertised as Fram 2995A Italy arrived and it was a MANN 930/13. Dissected it with following result.
Filer media tight and regular-400sq"
Standard drawback gasket-Silicon I believe
Stamped steel spring
Medium bypass pressure at bottom
Very few holes in the barrel to let oil in.
Barrel was bent from factory on dissection
My impression is that it is below the Jag and Hengst filters in pretty much all areas although not a low end
